River of Song
Ba’al Neginah Program
Advanced training for practitioners of Jewish spiritual music.
Master the spiritual artform of Neginah (Jewish soul music) alongside a selective two-year cohort of seasoned musical leaders, experienced artists, and prayer-space facilitators ready to elevate their craft, led by Joey Weisenberg.
The Journey of Neginah
To practice the spiritual artform of Neginah— Jewish soul music—is to launch into a deeply moving river.
The River of Song Ba'al Neginah Program is a two-year training path built for spiritual song practitioners - “Ba’alei Neginah” - who are ready to journey the whole length of the River of Song - from studying traditional origin streams of Jewish music to facilitating music in the flowing currents of community, to artistically creating new music at the confluence points of new song-filled movements, all the way to releasing our melodies into a universal ocean of song where all of the world's song-rivers join together.
We are gathering a cohort of Ba’alei Neginah who will dive into the study of ancient songs and prayers and also flow, adapt, and hold space for the full, vibrating complexity of a living tradition.
This program is led by Joey Weisenberg and conducted primarily online with optional in-person retreats to connect and enjoy singing together. It serves experienced musicians, prayer leaders, composers, rabbis, cantors, artists, and educators who want deeper mastery of musical-prayer modalities, a structured framework to anchor the practice they already carry, and a spiritual path of musical self-discovery.
If you are already carrying song in your community and feel called to deeper musical immersion, broader repertoire, and a more integrated practice, we invite you to join us.
A Cohort of Practitioners
This program is explicitly designed for intermediate-to-advanced musical practitioners, rather than beginners early on the path of exploration.
Who This Is Built For
This multi-year journey serves those who already carry a foundational musical-spiritual practice and want to take the next step:
-
Clergy and Prayer Leaders who know traditional liturgy and want to facilitate expansive, wordless nigunim, or unlock their own melodies, or play instruments.
-
Song Leaders and Teachers who know many communal songs but want a deeper connection with traditional Jewish prayer and to develop their own artistic voices.
-
Musicians and Singers who already play instruments and sing seriously and want to grow a new way of deploying their musicality in a Jewish spiritual context.
- Composers and Artists who want to better connect their creative work with traditional modalities of Jewish spiritual expression.
